Till the year 2018 MCI was functioning and controlling medical education in India. It was not only controlling the quality of medical education but the infrastructure of all medical collages irrespective of government or private. It was also responsible to grant the license to open and run new medical collage after due inspections and satisfaction that they maintain the required standard. From time to time allegations of nepotism and bribery also came up in public domain and the president of MCI was convicted and sent to jail when charges were found to be true by the court of law. This brought the necessity to change the system and remove the monopoly of MCI .
NMC act was made and passed by the parliament and got the approval of the President of Indian in 2019. It has got a large body called the board of governors (BOG) consisting of a chairman and 22 part-time members and 10 ex-office members. Presently professor Suresh Chandra Sharma the chief of AIIMS Delhi ENT head, Neck surgery department has been appointed as the first chairman of NMC. According to act, the members include IAS officers having expertise and connections with the medical education filed and reputed medical doctors experts in their filed to run the administration are associated with NMC. The NMC body is still under formation and as an when it will be fully functional independently working, There will be lot of improvement in medical education standards in India. It has been established for the development and regulation of medical education, profession, and the institution. It would also be responsible to remove all the corrupt practices that were leveled against the medical council of India.
